Faith in humanity is slipping...

(Mostly taken from [livejournal.com profile] sf_drama. When the swearing starts, it's me.)

The Pepsi Refresh Project is a monthly grant program run by Pepsi.

From their FAQ:

We are looking for ideas from individuals, non-profits and pro-social businesses that can make a positive impact in the community. Ideas should be feasible and completed 12 months from the date you receive the first funds. Ideas must have impact within one of the 50 United States or the District of Columbia.

Each month, up to $1.3 million will be awarded as follows: 2 Grants at the $250,000 level; 10 Grants at the $50,000 level; 10 Grants at the $25,000 level; and 10 Grants at the $5,000 level.

I think we can all agree that it's a wonderful program.

Some of the ideas currently listed at the $25,000 level:
- Integrate arts with academics in a center for challenged children
- Offer reading and math after school programs to at-risk rural children
- Provide room makeovers for children with disabilities in San Diego
- FictionAlley, a Harry Potter fanfic archive has submitted a grant proposal for $25,000 in charitable funds to keep their website up.

I just... there are no words for how fucking angry I am. That money is for charity, not for your precious Snape/Harry pr0nz. How ignorant do you have to be to do something like this? And, of course, they're encouraging people to vote for them. A lot of fandom is outraged, but some people are still voting for them...

So head over to the Pepsi Refresh Project and vote. There are so many good causes, and you get 10 votes every day! Don't let some stupid fansite admins take $25,000 from someone who really needs the money. :(

Spirit Day

It’s been decided. On October 20th, 2010, we will wear purple in honor of the 6 gay boys who committed suicide in recent weeks/months due to homophobic abuse in their homes at at their schools. Purple represents Spirit on the LGBTQ flag and that’s exactly what we’d like all of you to have with you: spirit. Please know that times will get better and that you will meet people who will love you and respect you for who you are, no matter your sexuality. Please wear purple on October 20th. Tell your friends, family, co-workers, neighbors and schools.

Stressful day of FAIL

So, you guys know I was supposed to be meeting P & J tonight?

Yeah, that didn't happen... )

I'm not really annoyed - it's no ones fault, after all, P can't help when she has to work - and as I had to go to London anyway it wasn't a wasted trip, but I was looking forward to it... But since I've got home and plugged my phone in, they've both texted saying sorry we couldn't meet up and hopefully can do it some other time. So it's ok :) And I'm moving to London in a fortnight, so once I'm there it's not such a disaster if things fall through at the last minute! I won't have to hang around a train station like a loner or be searching for a phonebox - I can just stay at my house :)

LJ fail

Okay, for everyone worried about the facebook/twitter thing, this code by [livejournal.com profile] xnguard will hide the facebook/twitter connect buttons when people comment on your journal. It won't stop them if they view your LJ in their own style, or if they have facebook/twitter automatically posting their comments, but at least it'll stop people accidently cross-posting, and hopefully deter people who haven't set it to automatically update.

Also, the LJ staff have finally responded, and there's a poll here to answer :)

Gay rights

Thanks to [livejournal.com profile] teleen_fiction, who I snagged this from.

I'm in tears after watching this. I just... I can't understand how anyone could hate someone so much just for who they love.

I'm so lucky, much luckier than I realise. My friends support me, my family support me. I live in a country where I have equal rights, regardless of sexual orientation. Where I can be free in expressing who I love.

The most I've ever had to deal with was a few nasty words from a boy at school when I said I wouldn't have sex with him, and the fact that one of my friends can't tell her parents I'm queer or else they would try to stop her being friends with me. Both those things are unacceptable, but... Compared to the terrible things these people have suffered in that video... It's nothing.

I always kind of laughed at homophobes - I mean, how stupid do you have to be to judge someone on what gender the person they fall in love with is? Let's face it - gender isn't that big a deal. One different chromosome, a few different hormones, and a slight plumbing difference down below. It's not much. It doesn't change the person.

But homophobes aren't stupid. They're inhuman. We're supposed to be a civilised species - murdering someone on the bases of their sexuality - on the bases of something they can't change - isn't civilised.

If anyone can watch that video and still feel that being gay is "wrong", just defriend me. Now. I don't want to have anything to do with you.

LJ making me sad :(

You'll probably see a lot of these kinds of posts in the next few days, but please can I ask that anyone commenting on my journal (including on f-locked posts) please not repost on Facebook or Twitter?

There's an almighty furora about the lack of opt-out on this new repost feature, because comments on a Real Life Facebook or Twitter account might give away people's more anonymous fandom identities.

I use this livejournal account for fandom only and don't want it associated with my Real Life facebook or any other account.

(Please repost this type message to your own account if necessary! Fight the man!)

EDIT: AND NOW TAGS WITH A "/" IN DON'T FUCKING WORK! WHAT THE FUCK, LJ?? DO YOU NOT UNDERSTAND HOW MANY PEOPLE AND COMMS USE FORWARD SLASHES?

Fucking hell, my paid time is up soon and I'm not sure if I'm going to renew it. I AM NOT PAYING FOR THIS BULLSHIT, LJ.

Now Dr. Horrible is here... Costume part 1

So, it's my friends birthday in a few weeks, and we're dressing up as super heroes and super villains. Obviously, there's only one person I'm going to dress as!

Anyway, I thought I'd make some posts on LJ about how I'm making the costume. My goggles and gloves have arrived from eBay, and the boots have been ordered. I'm making(!) the lab coat from the pattern very kindly made by [livejournal.com profile] queza7, which can be found here. I'm also building myself a Death Ray. :)

So, today I painted the goggles:

Warning: image heavy beneath the cut! )

So, that's my goggles done! Tomorrow I'll show how I made my Death Ray :)

Sherlock. And Buffy. Random mix is random, but spoiler-free.

OMG WHAT.

How can they end it like this??? ARG BBC I NEED ANOTHER SEASON NOW OR I WILL DIE. sdajkfhaklfhasdkhfdasklfhdskal!!

I'll make a more detailed review of the series later (probably tomorrow). What I find interesting is how much I enjoyed the show, given that I'm a bit of a Holmes purist (I refuse point blank to see the recent film). I think they got it absolutely spot on, and I love all the little references to the book canon. Moffet and Gatiss certainly know their Sherlock :)

In other news, I bought Buffy season 1 before I went on holiday and today I started watching it. I don't think I've seen the first season before (I certainly don't remember any of the episodes), but I'm really enjoying it. It's very '90s, lol, but I love it all the same. Also, Willow <3 Interesting side note, when I used to watch Buffy (when I was about twelve), I think I had a little proto-lesbian crush on Willow, way before I realised I was gay. Aww, bless. Lol.

Hi LJ
Hi everyone!

I'm not dead, just been on holiday :) We went down to Dorset for a few weeks. It was fun, and the weather wasn#t too bad for a change so I've actually got a bit of a tan!

Don't want to go back to work though...

(Oh, I'm also making a batch of icons as I've had fandom withdrawl so they'll be up tomorrow.)

No one is on MSN :( Grr, etc. And I feel like making icons or a new background for my lappy (it's a different screen resolution to my old one) BUT I CAN'T because I haven't installed PSP yet. I don't know where the disk is... Might be at my dad's work, or else in the study.

*Goes to look*
