The first time Billy saw her it was raining. He was sitting by the window next to his basket of freshly laundered clothes, waiting for the rain to stop, when he saw her. Unlike the rest of the pedestrians who were hurrying through the downpour, she was standing still with her washing basked hugged to her chest, tilting her face up to the sky and letting the rain flow over her skin.
He knew he was staring, but he just couldn’t tear his eyes away. She stood out from all the other people rushing along the street like a beautiful flower. Rather than hunching up in a drab dark coat, she was wearing a purple dress and a patterned cream jacket. Both were soaked through, and she was probably freezing, but she looked like she couldn’t care less. She laughed as a car raced by and splashed her and crossed the street to the Laundromat, her bright blue shoes dancing through the puddles.
She caught Billy’s eye as she stepped into the building and smiled at him. He blushed and looked at the floor, wishing he could think of something to say. When he had the courage to look up again, she was loading her clothes into the washer. Her red hair was hanging in straggles and was dripping water down her back, but it was still the most beautiful hair Billy had ever seen.
The first time Billy saw her it was raining. He saw her often after that; every Wednesday and most Saturdays. He saw her when it was cold and she wrapped up in knitted arms warmers and a long, stripy scarf. He saw her when it was windy and her hair whipped about her and became tangled as she walked along the street, although she never tied it up. He saw her when it was sunny and the bright sun lit up her hair like fire.
He saw her many times, in many ways, but he always preferred seeing her in the rain.
