Questions
They had to hide their relationship. As much as they loved each other they knew that people would judge them, that there would be too many questions.
So, whenever they were in public, they were careful to appear just as three close friends. They had their own code though; a touch on the arm instead of holding hands, a hug instead of a kiss, a smile instead of “I love you”.
Sometimes they wished they could be more open, but there was a certain thrill in having a secret no one else knew.
All they really needed was each other.
Loss
Captain Hammer pouted. “This isn’t fair.”
“You made the bet,” Billy reminded him.
“I thought I would win!”
Billy smiled down at Captain Hammer kneeling in front of him with his hands cuffed behind his back. “But you didn’t. Now, what was the arrangement?”
Captain Hammer sighed. “Be your sex slave all weekend,” he muttered.
Billy grinned. “Good boy.” He stroked Captain Hammer’s hair as the other man continued sulking. “Come on, it’s not like you won’t enjoy it.”
“Penny, you won’t let him do this…” Captain Hammer whined.
Penny laughed. “We’ve got a deal. I get you on Sunday.”
Comfort
She was sitting alone in the dark when they came home. As soon as Captain Hammer flicked on the light they saw something was wrong.
“Penny, what is it?” Billy asked worriedly as he sat beside her.
“It’s the Caring Hands shelter,” she whispered.
Captain Hammer stroked her hair. “What about it?”
“They’re cutting the funding. We might have to close.”
“I’m sorry,” Billy murmured, pulling her into a hug.
Captain Hammer leaned forwards and gently kissed the tears off her cheeks. Taking her hands in his, he said, “Don’t worry, Penny. We’ll find a way to keep it open.”
Hope
Captain Hammer charged into the bedroom at full pelt and tackled Penny and Billy, knocking them onto the bed.
“What do you want?” Billy gasped, massaging what he was sure were bruised ribs.
“Nothing,” Captain Hammer grinned. “Just wanted to say I love you.”
Penny groaned and smacked Captain Hammer with a pillow. “Idiot.”
“Next time, can you tell us that without trying to kill us?” Billy added, laughing despite himself.
“Where would be the fun in that?” Captain Hammer frowned, tugging the pillow away from Penny before she could hit him again.
Penny giggled. “I hope you never change.”
Cherish
It wasn’t a fairy tale. Sometimes they argued. Despite most of their bickering being in jest, Captain Hammer and Billy were both opinionated and often disagreed. Sometimes Penny, exhausted from work, would be driven mad by their squabbling.
It wasn’t a fairytale. It had ups and downs, just like every relationship. But that was okay; that made it real. They made sure never to go to bed on an argument, to always talk over their feelings.
They loved one another. It wasn’t a fairy tale, but for them it was perfect. None of them would change it for the world.
