If you dig deep into the background of this, you'll see the USA abstained because they allow capital punishment and never vote on this measure. It was still a close vote though. And actually the list that sexual orientation was removed from was a "non exhaustive" list of things people have been persecuted for in the past.
So it's more symbolic of the homophobia of the African nations than of the view of "the UN" in general. Maybe we should be targeting our disapproval to those that deserve it?
